The Clean Water Project

In 2014, the news of the Flynt, Michigan water crisis began to bring national awareness to the environmental issue of dangerous lead levels in the water of primarily black and brown communities around the country. News of the decreasing quality of freshwater made us begin to take notice of how delayed the response has been to make notable changes to fix the problem.

This situation has become particularly problematic in Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and close to home in Newark, NJ. Signs of a citywide crisis began to emerge in June 2017, when the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection first flagged Newark’s lead levels as exceeding the federal action level of 15 parts per billion over a six-month monitoring period. More than 10 percent of the homes sampled had levels nearly twice that. Some homes would later test higher than 36 or 64 times the federal action level.

According to a report by CBS News and an investigation conducted by the NRDC, the crisis began long before that summer, when the city failed to take the necessary steps at the Pequannock Treatment Plant to stop its water from being contaminated by corroding lead pipes and plumbing. As a result, lead began infusing into the city’s drinking water at an alarming rate. Lead exposure can cause adverse effects in adults, such as fertility issues, cognitive dysfunction, cardiovascular and kidney problems, and elevated blood pressure. Even low levels of exposure to this heavy metal have been linked to potentially irreversible damage to developing brains and nervous systems. Children and pregnant women are most at risk, and for years, Newark has had the greatest number of lead-poisoned children in New Jersey.

In an attempt to continue our efforts to help our ailing communities to overcome poverty and threats to healthy lifestyles, the Metamorphosis Women’s Empowerment Initiative has collaborated with some additional Community Organizations in the Poconos, PA, and Newark, NJ to create the Clean Water Project. The goal of the Clean Water Project is to assist in supplying as many families and communities in Newark, NJ with clean water as to reduce the infliction on the children and adults as a result of not having it.

The Metamorphosis Women’s Empowerment Initiative will coordinate gathering donations of 1,000,000 gallons of bottled water, delivery to Newark, NJ and affected neighboring communities, and distribution with the assistance from Community Organizations in those neighborhoods twice monthly. We look to partner together with businesses willing to donate and assist us to bring about a mutually satisfactory first step in this long-standing crisis in these communities.
